Alejandro Luis Callara

Alejandro Luis Callara is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (RTDB) at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa, where he also earned his Ph.D. in Information Engineering in 2019, as well as his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biomedical Engineering. His research lies at the intersection of bioengineering and neuroscience, with a specific focus on the design and development of computational models and advanced frameworks for biomedical signal and image processing.

Throughout his career, he has developed extensive expertise in the analysis of brain connectivity, physiological causal coupling, and interpersonal interaction, integrating machine learning techniques, time-series analysis, and advanced statistical methods to study complex physiological data such as EEG, fMRI, and autonomic signals, including EDA and HRV. He has participated in several national and international projects, including the Tuscany Health Ecosystem (THE), POTION, SENSEI, and BRAVE.

In addition to his research activity, Alejandro contributes to the scientific community as an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports (Springer Nature) and through his teaching role as the instructor for the Bioimaging course in the Master’s Degree Program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Pisa. He also cultivates a specialized research interest in the neural correlates of consciousness, maintaining active collaborations with institutions such as the Sera Jey Monastic University in India.
